Ugh, we’ve hit that mid-to-late winter blah… the holidays and New Year is done, New Year’s goals may be feeling daunting, and everything can feel a bit off-kilter. As winter settles in, I’ve been reflecting on how the season affects us, particularly those navigating it with ADHD. It’s a time that often brings an energy shift, a restlessness, and I am trying to find solace in embracing the simplicity and comfort of just being in the moment.

Staying active during these colder/darker/rainier months can be challenging. Personally, I’ve been exploring indoor workouts that not only keep me physically active but also infuse a sense of community—something I’m actively exploring and redefining for myself (see Pillar 1 below). Finding activities aligned with your interests can make a significant difference in maintaining energy levels. I’m trying an indoor functional weightlifting group class near my apartment.

Seasonal Depression is a reality for many of us. I’ve found incorporating light therapy (hello bright lights!) into my routine and spending time outdoors during daylight hours to be helpful for my mood and sleep (Pillar 5). It’s crucial to discover what resonates with you personally and contributes positively to your mental well-being. If all 6 Pillars of well-being sound overwhelming–pick one that appeals most and work on small steps towards that.

Pillar 4: Ongoing Exercise – Exercise Helps Your Brain at Any Age

Pillar 5: Restorative Sleep – Restful Sleep Makes Your Brain Work Better

Pillar 6: Eat Right – Eating Healthy Is Good for Your Brain

National Random Acts of Kindness Week

With National Random Acts of Kindness Week approaching (Feb 14-17), I’m setting a personal goal to perform small acts of kindness daily. These gestures, whether a thoughtful message or assisting a neighbor, create a beautiful ripple effect of positivity in our community.

When Is Random Acts of Kindness Week?

Random Acts of Kindness Day 2024 is February 17, and Valentine’s Day kicks off Random Acts of Kindness Week 2024.

The movement’s 40-plus-year history goes back to writer Anne Herbert’s 1982 CoEvolution Quarterly article, “Practice Random Acts of Kindness and Acts of Senseless Beauty,” which inspired a kindness movement in and around Berkeley, California.

Why Are Acts of Kindness Important?

According to the American Psychological Association, studies have shown that acts of generosity not only benefit the recipients but also boost the happiness and well-being of the person offering kindness.

Similarly, National Make a Friend Day (Feb 11) serves as a reminder of the importance of connection. Building meaningful connections, whether online or in person, adds a valuable layer to our lives.

As we navigate the winter together—remember spring is coming–, I encourage you to reflect on these insights and consider how they resonate with your experiences. Winter can be a time of introspection, self-care, and building connections. If you have any thoughts or personal experiences to share, I’m here to listen.
